The Midlands Area Food Bank (MAFB) is dedicated to educating and empowering South Carolinians by strengthening communities and advancing solutions to food insecurity. While MAFB was formally incorporated in 2022, its leadership brings more than 20 years of experience serving food-insecure populations across South Carolina. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a trusted community resource and emerging regional food bank, now serving thousands of individuals and families each year through a growing network of public, private, and community-based partnerships statewide.
Members of the MAFB leadership team — aptly known as The Coalition — bring more than 50 years of combined experience advocating on behalf of low- to moderate-income families across South Carolina. Over the years, we have made significant strides in building partnerships with public entities, corporations and foundations, nonprofits, community and faith-based organizations, social entrepreneurs, and other mission-driven collaborators to address the needs of vulnerable populations statewide.
Our extensive network of local partners has been instrumental in advancing initiatives at the intersection of hunger relief, health, education, and economic development. Since the Great Recession of 2008, and amid ongoing economic challenges, we have witnessed a steady rise in food insecurity among South Carolina families. In response, The Coalition intensified its efforts, particularly in rural communities, working closely with local partners to expand food distribution in areas with limited access.
To date, MAFB volunteers and partners have contributed hundreds of thousands of hours of service, along with vehicle capacity and manpower, to support mobile and community-based food distribution. These collective efforts have enabled us to deliver food directly to churches, community organizations, and underserved neighborhoods throughout South Carolina, reaching people and places where traditional distribution systems were limited or unavailable.
All of this work was accomplished through grassroots organizing and sustained partnership engagement. Based on our firsthand experience working “on the ground” in communities across the state, we recognized a critical need for a USDA-designated food bank in South Carolina focused primarily on mobile distribution in food deserts and other underserved, vulnerable regions.
Through effective leadership and dedicated people, Midlands Area Food Bank is helping lead the way in mobile food distribution across South Carolina. Our motto — “Let’s Power Up to Stamp Out Hunger in South Carolina” — reflects more than a slogan; it represents two decades of service, collaboration, and commitment to addressing food insecurity.
We invite you to join us on this journey as we plant seeds of hope throughout South Carolina. Building on the past and looking toward the future, let’s power up and expand our reach across the state, together advancing solutions to hunger and strengthening communities for generations to come.
